Is it permitted to open bottles on Shabbat?

Question

Hi, is it permitted to open bottles on Shabbat? Are there two opinions? And what is Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l's view?

Thank you very much

Answer

Shalom u'vracha,

Indeed, there is a dispute among the poskim whether it is permitted to open bottles on Shabbat. In any case, according to the view of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l, it is permitted to open on Shabbat a bottle of grape juice that is sealed with a metal cap, or a bottle of soft drink that is sealed with a plastic cap. However, it is preferable to be stringent and open the bottle before Shabbat, where this is possible (Shu"t Yechaveh Da'at, part 2, siman 42; Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, part 5, p. 368; and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Yalkut Yosef, siman 314, se'ifim 19-20).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
