Does a Chanukah menorah require genizah?

AA

Question

Does a broken Chanukah menorah need genizah, or may it be thrown away? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

According to the letter of the law, the menorah may be thrown away. However, if it is evident that it was used for a mitzvah, it is preferable not to discard it disgracefully (that is, to wrap it in a bag and only afterward place it in the trash).

Sources: See Ginzai HaKodesh (chapter 16, note 16, and chapter 19, section 13).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
