A Pregnant Woman Entering a Cemetery
When It Is Permitted and When It Is Forbidden
Question
Hello, Rabbi. I would be glad to know whether there is any prohibition for a pregnant woman to enter a cemetery. When is it permitted, and when is it forbidden? Thank you very much.
Answer
Shalom uverachah,
1. There is no prohibition for a pregnant woman to enter a cemetery, but there is a custom among many women to refrain from doing so during their pregnancies (see Responsa Minchat Yitzchak, vol. 10, siman 42, subsection 2). However, when there is a need, she may enter there without concern (Chazon Ovadiah, Aveilut, vol. 1, p. 313, and Netai Gavriel, Aveilut, vol. 2, chapter 84, subsection 4).
2. It is also permitted for the pregnant wife of a kohen to enter a cemetery. This permission applies even when she knows that she is carrying a boy. Nevertheless, as noted, many women, including those not married to a kohen, customarily refrain from entering a cemetery during pregnancy when there is no need to do so.
With blessings, Hillel Meirs
