Is it permitted for a man to wear an earring?

I am a religiously observant young man with one earring in my ear. My question is whether this is forbidden and why? And if I am not falling away from observance and it is still on me, is it still forbidden?

In any case, this is not proper, and it is completely inappropriate, and one who guards his soul should stay far away from it.
