Regarding the 248 limbs and 365 tendons.
Question
My question is that Chazal counted 248 limbs and 365 tendons. In modern times, the limbs were counted and it was found that it is possible to count 248 limbs, but that depends on the method of counting. By contrast, in the human body there are 4,000 tendons and not 365. Could you please explain this?
Answer
To the esteemed questioner,
As I understand it, there are tendons that are counted today by the field of biology, which are actually small tendons that extend from a large tendon. Therefore, the entire disagreement about the number is only about the method of counting. But one should not doubt the knowledge of Chazal regarding the parts of the body, because, as I learned, in their time they also performed surgeries.
Respectfully,
Rabbi Nachum
