Why do we celebrate Rosh Hashanah in Tishrei and not in Nissan?

AA

Question

In the Torah it is written explicitly that the first month is Nissan, so why do we celebrate Rosh Hashanah in Tishrei? It seems to me that it is because on the first of Tishrei man was created, but I would like to hear an answer from someone who understands, and to see sources. Thank you in advance.

Answer

To the questioner,

It is accepted from the Arizal that the dispute among the Tannaim in the Gemara in Rosh Hashanah (10a), these and those are the words of the living Hashem (in Shaar HaShofar, chapter 5).

And so it is brought in Tosafot (Rosh Hashanah 27a): that the world arose in thought to be created in Tishrei, and was created in Nissan.

And it is explained in the books of Chassidut that these are in fact two aspects (Shem MiShmuel, Shemot 5672), and this may also be supported by the words of our Sages: In the beginning, it arose in thought to create it with the attribute of justice (Tishrei); He saw that the world could not endure, and joined with it the attribute of mercy (Nissan).

Therefore, the day of Rosh Hashanah, when all the creatures of the world are judged before Him, in the aspect of judgment, we celebrate at the beginning of Tishrei.

With blessings,

Rabbi Nachum
