Women
Laws of Ritual Purity During Pregnancy
Question
Shalom Rav,
I would like to ask what the halacha is regarding the laws of ritual purity during pregnancy?
It is known that sometimes there may be bleeding during pregnancy, especially at the beginning, what is known as "implantation bleeding," and sometimes there may be brown discharge.
First, in general - is there any medical problem with immersing in the mikveh at any stage of pregnancy if there is a need to become ritually pure? Is there a need to inform the mikveh attendant?
Also, what is the ruling regarding brown discharge that sometimes occurs during pregnancy? Does it render one ritually impure, or is this something that requires a separate examination each time?
Thank you very much, and a good week.
Answer
Shalom and blessings,
A. There is no problem at all for a healthy woman to immerse during pregnancy.
B. Brown discharge generally does not render one ritually impure; nevertheless, it should be shown to a rabbi, who will examine the stain and rule on the matter.
It is highly proper to wear colored underwear, so that all stains do not render one ritually impure, and there is no concern from such discharge or others, so long as it is not actual bleeding.
With blessings,
Binyamin Shmueli
