Yom Kippur: Is it possible to fast but drink water?

AA

Question

Is it possible to drink water and fast? Someone told me that she is thirsty, but she only drinks water, and she says that this counts for her as fasting. Is that true or not?

Answer

Hello and blessings.

It is forbidden to drink water on a fast day. However, even someone who has erred and drunk on Yom Kippur must continue fasting, and every act of eating or drinking is a separate prohibition.

For your information, after the initial overcoming of thirst, it no longer bothers.
