Is it halachically permitted to speak after Kriat Shema al HaMitah?

Must one go to sleep immediately after Kriat Shema al HaMitah?

AA

Question

1. After Kriat Shema al HaMitah, must one go to sleep immediately, or may one remain awake afterward?

2. Is it forbidden to speak afterward?

Thank you very much for the help!!!

Answer

Shalom u-vracha,

One should go to sleep immediately after Kriat Shema al HaMitah and not speak at all, as the Rema wrote (section 239, subsection 1): one should not eat or drink, nor speak after Kriat Shema on his bed, אלא should sleep immediately, as it is said (Psalms 4:5), Have your say in your hearts upon your beds, and be silent, Selah.

Nevertheless, if one transgressed and spoke, his blessing is not in vain, and he does not need to repeat the blessing at all, as explained in Yechaveh Daat, volume 4 (section 21).

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
