Is it permitted to give non-kosher food to a dog?

Question

Hello, is it permitted to bring non-kosher food into the house (with pork fat) so that the dog will eat it?

Thank you

Answer

Hello,

It is permitted to bring non-kosher food into the house in order to feed a dog, and as it is stated (Exodus 22:30), "And flesh that is torn in the field you shall not eat; you shall cast it to the dogs," from which it follows that one may feed a dog and other animals non-kosher foods.

However, food that is forbidden for benefit (for example, meat and milk that were cooked together) may not be fed to a dog or to other animals, even if they do not belong to him (Taz, Yoreh Deah, siman 94, seif katan 4. See also Hilkhot Olam, vol. 7, p. 11, and Yalkut Yosef, Issur veHeter, siman 87, seif 33).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
