Sleep Talking
Question
Shalom rav,
I came across a strange case: when my nephew is sleeping, he says a few sentences and goes back to sleep, and this happens every time he sleeps.
My question is what this means and how it can be resolved?
Thank you,
Yehuda
Answer
Hello and blessings,
Sleep talking is not dangerous, and there is no need to attach special importance to it.
"Sleep talking (somniloquy) is a parasomnic phenomenon of speaking out loud during sleep. The speech can range from simple, meaningless sounds to long sentences. People around a person who is talking in his sleep may or may not understand what he is saying. Sleep talking usually occurs during a brief awakening from NREM sleep (Non-REM sleep, sleep that is not REM sleep - that is, one of the stages of sleep in which there is no rapid eye movement), meaning a transition that is not direct from one stage of deep sleep to another, and the result is partial awakening. In addition, the disorder can also occur during REM sleep, in which case it constitutes a kind of motor breakthrough of speech experienced in a dream; words spoken in the dream are then heard aloud. Sleep talking can occur on its own or as a manifestation of other sleep disorders" (Wikipedia)
