Can the baby’s father be the sandak at his brit?

AA

Question

Hello, honored rabbi,

In continuation of your answer on choosing the sandak, is it possible for the baby’s father to be the sandak? According to stories I hear, it is said that the role of the sandak is to take the father’s place in situations, Heaven forbid, in which the father cannot function. Therefore, I am asking: is there any truth to this? And is it better to give the honor to the grandfather and not to the father?

With respect,

Answer

Hello and blessings,

The father may be the sandak. However, it is customary to honor a grandfather or an important person with the sandak honor.

With blessings,

Benjamin Shmueli
