Is it permitted to attend the wedding of a woman marrying a woman?

AA

Question

Hello, Rabbi,
My cousin sent me an invitation to her wedding, and she is marrying a woman.
Is it permitted for me to attend such an event?

Answer

Hello and greetings,

Since it is forbidden for a woman to live in such a way with another woman, as explained in Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer, siman 20, seif 2, it is therefore forbidden to attend such a wedding for two reasons:

1. Supporting and giving approval to transgressors (see a similar case in Mishnah Berurah, siman 347, end of small seif katan 7).

2. Desecration of Hashem's Name (and see also in Sefer Ashrei Ha'ish, part Yoreh Deah, part 1, chapter 10, seif 40, in the name of HaGri"sh Elyashiv zt"l, that a brother should not go to his sister's wedding when she is marrying a non-Jew because of desecration of Hashem's Name. The same applies in our case).

Much success,

Hillel Meirs
