Is It Permitted to Embroider a Verse on a Tallit?

AA

Question

Can one embroider, on a tallit for a bar mitzvah boy, the verse exactly like this: ״לדוד ה’ אורי וישעי״?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom rav,

One may not embroider any verse on a tallit.

Sources: The Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 283, seif 4), writes that it is forbidden to embroider verses on a tallit. The Taz there explained that this prohibition has two reasons:

1. Because it is forbidden to write a single verse.

2. Moreover, since a tallit, although it has tzitzit, is considered an object used for a mitzvah and not an object with inherent sanctity, one may nevertheless bring a tallit with tzitzit into a bathroom and a mikveh and use it and cover one’s nakedness with it. How, then, can one bring holy writings into a place of filth and disgrace, as the Rambam wrote in a responsum cited by the Beit Yosef. According to this, wherever something may at some point come to be degraded, one should not write a verse there. See also the Shach there.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
