Solar Eclipse

Question

I would like to know what a solar eclipse means in the Torah and how it affects life.

Are there successes or failures?

Is it permitted to go to important pursuits, such as an exam or establishing a family / wedding?

Answer

Hello and blessings,

A solar eclipse is a bad sign for the nations and not for Jews, as it is written in the Gemara:

The Sages taught: When the sun is eclipsed - it is a bad sign for idol worshippers; when the moon is eclipsed - it is a bad sign for the enemies of Israel, because Israel counts by the moon and idol worshippers by the sun. Eclipsed in the east - it is a bad sign for the inhabitants of the east; in the west - it is a bad sign for the inhabitants of the west; in the middle of the sky - it is a bad sign for the entire world. If its face is like blood - the sword is coming to the world; if like sackcloth - the arrows of famine are coming to the world; if it is both this and that - both the sword and the arrows of famine are coming to the world. If it is eclipsed at its entry - punishment is slow to come; at its exit - it hastens to come. And some say the opposite. And there is no nation that is eclipsed without its deity being eclipsed with it, as it is said in Exodus 12, And against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments. And when Israel do the will of the Omnipresent, they need not fear any of these, as it is said in Jeremiah 10, Do not learn the way of the nations, and do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the nations are dismayed at them; the nations are dismayed, and Israel are not dismayed.

You may continue life as usual, and with Hashem's help you will succeed in all that you undertake.

With blessings,

Benjamin Shmueli
