Question

Why were dogs created? What is their role in the world?

Answer

Hello and blessings,

The word "kelev" contains the word "lev" because the dog was created with the quality of loyalty. The dog is a loyal animal created for human use and benefit. It helps him in many ways:

Dogs guard people’s homes, in the past they helped with hunting, and they assisted shepherds in watching over the flock. Thus they are mentioned in the Book of Job (30:1): "my flock dogs." The Torah relates that at the Exodus from Egypt, "not a dog shall sharpen its tongue" (Exodus 11:7), and the Midrash notes that this was a miracle during the plague of the firstborn, that the dogs did not bark.

They are easy to train, and therefore dogs are also used by the police - for finding dangerous substances and for protection. Dogs also serve faithfully people with disabilities (and are called "guide dogs").

In addition, dogs are used as pets, and provide emotional support and enjoyment for many people. Dogs are more attuned to human beings than any other animal, and are able to recognize human facial features and emotions. The role of dogs is primarily to protect and guard, and therefore a dog’s nature is to bark at strangers in order to protect its owner.
