Question

Good morning, we were blessed with a baby girl, thank G-d, on the 13th of Tevet. I would love to hear which of the names Tohar, Emunah, Noa, or Gefen is recommended.

We would appreciate guidance, thank you.

Answer

Shalom uvrakhah,

The name Noa is good and recommended, because it is mentioned in the Torah (Bamidbar 27:1) that she was one of the five daughters of Tzelofchad, and it is stated in the Gemara (Bava Batra 119b) that the daughters of Tzelofchad were wise, expounders, and righteous. The name Odel is also good.

As for the name Emunah, there are those who hold that it is a recommended name for a girl (Yeshuot Mordekhai, p. 118, in the name of Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, of blessed memory), and there are those who hold that it is not recommended (see Shemot Baaretz, p. 173, in the name of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, of blessed memory). However, the names Tohar and Gefen are not recommended.

With blessings for mazal tov and much nachat,

Hillel Meirs
