Question

Is there any problem with nursing a baby after a break in nursing?

Answer

Greetings,

A woman may nurse a healthy baby until the age of four, and a sick baby until the age of five, as long as the woman has nursed him continuously.

However, after the age of two, if the baby has stopped nursing for three full days, the woman may not resume nursing him, unless the reason for the interruption in nursing was due to the baby being ill, in which case he may continue nursing.

And if you express milk into a vessel, you may give it also to a baby who has passed the age of two, even if more than three full days have passed since he last nursed.

Sources: Based on what is explained in Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 81, seif 7).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
