Is It Permissible to Study Torah While Lying Down?

AA

Question

Hello, Rabbi, is there an obligation to sit in a precise manner when studying Torah, such as when studying alone at home from a book? Or may one lie down a little, or sit with one’s feet up while reading? Thank you very much!!

Answer

Hello,

One must study Torah with awe and reverence (see Berakhot 22b), and therefore one should not study Torah in a bodily posture that is not respectful. However, if a person is tired and it is difficult for him to study Torah while sitting, it is permitted to study while lying down, but one should not continue Torah study in this manner except for a short time, until he rests.
