Is It Permitted to Buy Olive Oil from Non-Jews?

Question

Is it permitted to buy olive oil from non-Jews?

Thank you very much

Answer

Peace be upon you,

One should not buy olive oil from non-Jews without certified kosher supervision. Sources: It is true that the Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 114, seif 7), rules that oil belonging to non-Jews is permitted and is not forbidden neither because of bishul akum nor because of geulei akum. The Taz (sk 7) and the Shach (sk 9) explained that it is not forbidden because of bishul akum since it can be eaten raw, and it is not forbidden because of geulei akum because meat and fat impair the oil. In any case, the Kaf HaChayim (there, sk 33) wrote that this leniency applies only when it is known that the oil is clean, but where there is concern for a prohibited substance, one does not enter into this matter, for everything depends on the place and the time. And in our time as well, the reality is that there are concerns that non-kosher ingredients are added to olive oil. Therefore, one should not buy olive oil without certified kosher supervision.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
