Can clipped fingernails be thrown in the trash?

Hello, honored rabbi,
Are clipped fingernails required to be thrown into the sink/toilet, or may they be thrown into the garbage can?

It is permitted to throw clipped fingernails into the trash.
Nonetheless, it is preferable to throw them into the sink or toilet.
