The Meaning of the Phrase Toleh Eretz Al Belimah

AA

Question

Hello, I have two different questions. I am a secular 24-year-old man, and I heard in one of Rabbi Zamir's lectures that the meaning of the phrase toleh eretz al belimah is that the Creator sustains the world with nothing, meaning that nothing holds up the globe or space. Today I listened to a lecture by Rabbi Amnon Yitzchak, and there I heard him say that the meaning is to know when to stop your anger and to restrain your mouth in a moment of anger. My question is which of the explanations is correct, and the more important question is how it is possible that there are several completely different explanations of the same phrase?

Answer

Peace and blessing. In Torah there is peshat, remez, derash, and sod. Every verse in the Torah, aside from its simple meaning, can also be expounded through remez, derash, and sod. The simple meaning is the explanation given by Rabbi Zamir.

With blessing - Binyamin Shmueli
