Is it permissible to give a gift during the Nine Days?

Question

Is it permissible to bring a gift (for a birthday celebration...) during the Nine Days?

Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

It is permissible to give a gift during the Nine Days, except on Tisha B'Av.

Sources:This is indeed explained in the words of the Chavot Ya'ir zt"l in his book Makor Chaim (Section 529, Paragraph 10), where he wrote that it is a simple custom to go from house to house during these days to receive gifts as usual and to hold a celebratory meal. It is also implied from what the Mishnah Berurah (Section 558, Note 41) wrote that it is forbidden to send a gift to a friend on Tisha B'Av. This indicates that on the other days leading up to Tisha B'Av, there is no prohibition. See also what is brought in the book Nechamat Yisrael (Chapter 5) regarding this matter.

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
