Why Do I Dream About Him When I Am Trying to Forget Him?

AA

Question

Hello, honorable rabbi.

I want to ask a question that has been troubling me for such a long time. There is one person whom I love with all my heart, a person who took my soul from me. I loved him with all my heart, but I never told him; I simply kept it to myself. My pride would not allow me to tell him what was going on inside me. Many times he confessed to me and said that he loved me, but I was afraid of my feelings and lied to him that I did not love him. We argued a lot about this. I did not tell him that I loved him, even though I wanted to. I did not find the courage to say it, and many times I tried to forget him, but he would always come to me in my dreams, and would not let me forget. He only reminded me of my feelings and of his words, and I would give in. My question is: why am I not able to do this now, when he is no longer here, when he is far from me and has gone on with his life? Why, when I tell myself that I will forget him, does he come to me and not let me forget? Today I dreamed that I was standing next to him, and we were on a bridge, and there were other people standing beside me. I tried to cross it, but he would not let me. He put a gold bracelet on me, and his name was written on the bracelet. He led me after him; I walked after him as if hypnotized, and he got on a bus and disappeared. Through the whole dream I searched for him and for a way to cross the bridge, but I was not successful. This is not the first time. Once I dreamed about him that we were in a familiar place, and there was a dog that wanted to bite me, and he drove it away. And once I dreamed that I was holding a baby in my arms, and he was beside me, embracing me and playing with the baby and making me smile. There were more dreams. I feel as though it is impossible to remove him from my heart.

Answer

To the questioner,

Please forgive the delay in responding.

Imaginations that have been absorbed into a person's subconscious, especially those connected to deep feelings, always rise in a dream as a natural expression of the subconscious. These dreams should not be viewed as a sign from Heaven.

The way for the dreams about that person to stop to a significant extent is this: when you marry and find the proper outlet for the deep feelings within you, then those feelings will be directed and attached to the image of your fit husband, and then the feelings will no longer be tied, even subconsciously, to the image of the past.

With blessings,

Rabbi Nachum
