The Source of the Expression "For Better and for Worse"
Question
Many times I have heard rabbis in lectures (Rav Fanger, for example) say the phrase "for better and for worse." Where did the word "worse" come from as a word describing the opposite of good? Thank you, Ben David Leah
Answer
Peace and all good, The reason people say "for better and for worse" is in order to speak in clean language. Therefore, instead of saying "for better and for evil," one says "for better and for worse," and this also allows room for a favorable interpretation.
With blessings,
