Do You Recite a Blessing over Medicine?

AA

Question

Do you recite the blessing Shehakol over medicine?

Thank you

Answer

Shalom rav,

If the medicine has a good taste, one should recite Shehakol over it. If it does not have a good taste, one should not recite any blessing at all.

Sources: Based on what the Shulchan Aruch wrote (siman 204, seif 8), all foods and drinks that a person eats or drinks for medicinal purposes: if their taste is good and the palate benefits from them, one recites a blessing before and after. The Mishnah Berurah wrote (seif katan 43) that if their taste is good, this means that even though one does not desire them at all and eats them only because of the compulsion of illness, since in any case the palate benefits from them. This is also brought in Sefer Ashrei Haish, part 1 (chapter 36, section 68) in the name of the Grish Elyashiv zt"l: a medicine that has only a slight sweetness, and if not for the need for the medicine he would not eat it, one should recite a blessing over it because he benefits from it. And so ruled in Chazon Ovadia, Berachot (page 159), that one should recite a blessing over a sweet syrup that he drinks for medicinal purposes.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
