Why "KeRacham Av Al Banim"?

AA

Question

Hello, honorable Rabbi,

Why do we ask that Hashem have mercy on us "keRacham av al banim" and not "keRacham em al banim"?
After all, a mother is usually more sensitive and more forgiving.

Thank you in advance

Answer

Hello and blessings,

Alshich, Psalms, chapter 103

For "keRacham av" refers to Avraham, who asked Him, may He be blessed, what he preferred for his children: Gehenna or exile, and He chose exile for us (Bereishit Rabbah 44:21), for it is better for a man to suffer in this world than in the World to Come. So Hashem had mercy on those who fear Him, who are also called children, as it says, "You are children to Hashem" (Devarim 14:1), and He chose for Israel suffering in this world in place of the suffering of Gehenna.

Another answer.

Daf Al Daf, Pesachim 2b

The story is well known that the Imrei Emes Rebbe, of blessed memory, once said that a mother has more compassion for her children than a father, and his wife, the rebbetzin, of blessed memory, asked him: But we say in prayer, "keRacham av al banim." If so, it is clear that a father has more compassion, and therefore we ask this as well of the Almighty.

He answered her that we ask that Hashem have mercy on us at least as a father has mercy on his children, because we do not dare to ask for the compassion of a mother.

With blessings,

Binyamin Shmueli
