Cooking in an Oven on a Festival
Question
May food that was cooked on a festival in an oven be eaten, after the fact? And what is the difference between increasing the flame on a gas stove and raising the temperature in an oven?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
It is forbidden to operate an electric oven on a festival, and likewise to increase the temperature on a festival. This is because in some ovens, increasing the temperature causes a new heating element to turn on, unlike a gas stove, where you are only increasing the existing flame. It is, after all, forbidden to ignite a new fire on Yom Tov, only to light from an existing fire.
After the fact, if someone operated the electric oven on a festival in violation of the law and cooked in it, the food that was cooked in it may be eaten. (Chazon Ovadia, Yom Tov, p. 49).
Happy festival,
