The Names Yiskah, Uriyah, and Aviah for a Daughter
Question
Good news, with Hashem's kindness I have been blessed with a daughter. I would be glad to hear your opinion on the following names: Yiskah, Uriyah, and Aviah. Which is most recommended, and which should not be used at all?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Good day,
The names Yiskah and Aviah are good and recommended. Regarding the name Uriyah, if your intention is the name Uriyah, it should not be used for a daughter because it is a masculine name. And if your intention is the name Uriah with a cholam, this name is not mentioned in the Torah or in any other ancient source, so it is advisable to refrain from naming a daughter with this name.
Sources: The Torah in Sefer Bereishit (chapter 11, verse 29) calls Sarah Yiskah, and as the Gemara in Masechet Megillah (14a) says, Yiskah is Sarah, and why was she called Yiskah? Because she could see through ruach ha-kodesh. Another explanation: Yiskah because everyone gazed at her beauty. See there. The name Aviah also appears in the Tanach; see Sefer Divrei HaYamim II (29:1), where that was the name of King Chizkiyahu's mother. See there.
With wishes for mazel tov and much nachat,
Hillel Meirs
