Who Is Jesus?
Question
Hi, Rabbi, what is the story of Jesus son of Joseph, Jesus? What did he do that he was crucified and caused the Jewish people to hate him? Is Jesus the Messiah? Was Jesus righteous? Was Jesus a devout believer in Hashem?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
The Gemara (Sanhedrin 107) relates that Jesus was a mamzer, and became a disciple of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Perachyah. One day, Jesus spoke with his teacher about a woman’s appearance, and Rabbi Yehoshua was upset with him. Jesus asked Rabbi Yehoshua for his forgiveness again and again, and did not understand him when he forgave him. As a result of the feeling of excommunication that he felt, Jesus decided to leave the study hall and establish for himself a new religion that would oppose the sages. The Sages said that Jesus "performed sorcery and incited and led others astray."
As a result, the Sages handed Jesus over to the Roman authorities who ruled in the land, and they crucified him.
Jesus was a false messiah and a wicked man who misled people with his lies, and according to all Christian writings, Jesus seems to have thought of himself as Hashem Himself, descending into the world in human form. Thus, belief in Jesus is in effect a kind of idol worship and belief in a god-man. This is, of course, heresy against the God of Israel, and delusion of the imagination.
With blessings,
Daniel Bels
