Bedtime Shema After Selichot

How to Recite Kriat Shema al HaMitah After Selichot

AA

Question

When is it proper, and how is it proper, to recite Kriat Shema al HaMitah when going to Selichot? (There, too, one recites Shema and supplications.)

Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

When returning from the recitation of Selichot, one recites Kriat Shema al HaMitah as usual before going to sleep. However, if you recite Kriat Shema al HaMitah within half an hour after reciting Selichot, there is no need to repeat Vidui. If half an hour has passed, Vidui should be repeated (see Kaf HaChaim, siman 1, seif katan 23, and Ohr LeTzion, part 2, chapter 45, section 44).

With blessing, Hillel Meirs
