Question

Hello, for the first time in my life I heard stories about Jewish mythology and was told about the existence of Lilith, who was the first woman before Eve, and because of her immoral behavior, Eve was created. I searched online and indeed found mentions of Lilith in the Bible. Is this true or just a myth?

Answer

Hello

There are no myths in our holy Torah, the words of our sages are alive and enduring, reliable and precious forever. Indeed, there was a first Eve who preceded Eve, the wife of the first man, and I will quote to you from the Zohar (Zohar Bereshit 28b): Rabbi Yehoshua said, the first Eve was taken from him and she causes harm to creatures, as it says, 'And He took one of his ribs,' this is the first one taken from him because she is a harmful spirit, and He closed up the flesh in its place, meaning that another was created in her stead. Rava said this was flesh and the other was not flesh, and what was it? Rabbi Yitzchak said - the impurity of the land and its guardian.

The first Eve has a connection with Lilith, the mother of all demons, as explained at length in the holy Zohar (Vayikra 19:1) the whole story of her begins before Eve was created and ends when Hashem destroys Rome in the end of days.

I find no interest in researching these matters, while many parts of our holy Torah that concern us more have still not been studied and integrated into our souls.

Good luck – Menashe Israel
