Halachot and Customs
What should be done with the wine left in the kiddush cup?
Question
Dear Rabbi, hello.
We have started making kiddush every Friday and wanted to know whether it is permitted to pour out the wine after the meal, or whether some other practice is customary.
Thank you in advance.
Answer
Hello. It is permitted to pour out the wine, but there is a better way: pour a little from the bottle into the cup, and then return the wine from the cup to the bottle. A cup used for kiddush, from which someone has drunk, is considered defective, and it is not appropriate to use it for kiddush again unless one pours a little from the bottle into the cup, thereby correcting the wine. (This is a halachic matter that is not the place to explain in detail here.) Much success.
