Will the world continue as usual after the coming of Mashiach?

AA

Question

Hello, honored rabbi.

I have a few questions about what will be after the coming of Mashiach, and they may sound a little funny.
Will the world continue as usual, of course with the changes that Mashiach ben David will bring with him?
On weekdays, will we still have phones and outings at restaurants?
Will people still be able to fly and travel around the world for vacations?
I am truly waiting for Mashiach to come and redeem the dear people of Israel, and may it be Hashem's will that there will be goodness in the world.
I do not like to add, but will all the lives we have lived until now and all our dreams and our hopes have to be given up because Mashiach is here? Or will we be able to continue as usual, but with the Torah and everything Mashiach brings with him?

Answer

Greetings,

In principle, the world will continue as usual, and as the Rambam wrote (Laws of Kings 12:1), one should not imagine that in the days of Mashiach anything from the natural order of the world will be nullified, or that there will be any novelty in the work of Creation; rather, the world will continue according to its custom, and so on.

However, he wrote there (halacha 4) that the sages and prophets did not long for the days of Mashiach in order that they should rule over the whole world, nor in order that they should subjugate the nations, nor in order that the peoples should honor them, nor in order to eat and drink and rejoice, but so that they would be free for Torah and its wisdom, and would have no oppressor or disruptor, so that they would merit the World to Come.

And he continued and wrote (there, halacha 5) that at that time there will be neither famine nor war nor envy nor competition, for good will be abundant and all delicacies will be as common as dust, and the sole occupation of the entire world will be to know Hashem alone. Therefore, Israel will be great sages and will know hidden matters and will attain knowledge of their Creator according to human ability, as it is stated (Isaiah 11:9), For the earth will be full of the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
