What is meant by And God saw that it was good?
Question
Why did the Holy One, blessed be He, say "for it was good" after each day of the creation of the world? It seems clear to me that the work of the Holy One, blessed be He, was that creation would be exactly as He intended, and I derive this from the verse, The end of an action is in the initial thought.
Answer
Greetings,
Ramban (Genesis 1:4) explains that of every created thing whose creation the Holy One, blessed be He, completed, and which He wanted to remain as it was, the verse states that Hashem saw the present creation, that it was good as it was.
Therefore, on the second day He did not say that it was good regarding the division of the waters, because the division of the waters had still not yet taken place as the Holy One, blessed be He, ultimately wanted it to be, as explained by Rashi (Genesis 1:6). Likewise, on the first day He said that it was good only regarding the creation of the light, since the light was completed on that day as the Holy One, blessed be He, desired; whereas regarding the creation of the earth, He did not say that it was good on the first day, because it had still not yet been properly completed until the third day, when the dry land was revealed.
