Does a Can Opener Require Immersion?

AA

Question

Does a can opener and wine bottles require immersion?
And why?

Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

There is no need to immerse a can opener or bottles, even if it touches food, since its entire function is to open the utensil and not to prepare the food.

Sources: This was also brought in the book Tevilat Keilim (chapter 11, note 133) in the name of the late Rabbi Shmuel Wosner, that even a can opener that touches food when opening it does not require immersion. So too ruled the late Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (brought in the book Ashrei Haish, Yoreh Deah, part 1, chapter 9, section 17) and the late Rabbi Nissim Karelitz in the book Chut Shani, Laws of Tevilat Keilim (page 40), that a can opener does not require immersion. See there.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
