Faith
Meaning of Modah Ani
Question
What is the meaning of the verse: "Modah ani lefanekha, King who lives and endures, for You have returned my soul to me in compassion; abundant is Your faithfulness"? Why "abundant is Your faithfulness"? Whose faithfulness?
Answer
Hello
This is based on the verse, "They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness." Each day, when Hashem renews creation as we rise in the morning (of course it is renewed every moment, but the time when we recognize this and feel it is at the time of rising, which is like a small resurrection of the dead for us), and returns our soul to our body, we say, abundant is Your faithfulness: the trust that can be placed in You, as in the words of the song, "Faithful in His trust." Every evening you go to sleep in confidence that in the morning you will awaken, and Hashem will return the life within you, and this is not like a deposit with flesh and blood. When you entrust an article to your friend in full, it often comes back damaged or missing, but with Hashem you go to sleep tired and worn out, and in the morning you receive your soul refreshed and full of strength.
For this, abundant is Your faithfulness is worthy of praise.
