When is it necessary to bless onMezonot foods as one does with bread?

Question

Is there a specific quantity that, if I eat from it, I am obligated to wash my hands and say the hamotzi blessing as I would with bread? Thank you for your help.

Answer

Greetings,

If you are eating Mezonot foods such as cake, with a measure of 216 grams, you need to wash your hands, recite Hamotzi, and say Birkat Hamazon (the grace after meals). It is preferable to be strict and eat a measure of 230 grams (see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 168:6, Mishnah Berurah 25, and Yalkut Yosef Part 3, 168:8).

There are additional details regarding this, and it is advisable to consult the book Yalkut Yosef (there).

Sincerely,

Hillel Meirs
