Halachot and Customs

Is it permissible to use Tarot cards?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi, I have some questions and would appreciate your response.

1) My sister watches videos on YouTube where she selects a Tarot card (based on the topic of the question in the video) and sees the answer. Is it permissible according to Halacha to watch such videos?

2) She also watches a video about a Tarot card reading for what will happen to her that month (the use is with cards, but she does not need to choose a card; it is based on her zodiac sign and date of birth). Is this permissible?

3) Is it permissible according to halacha to read horoscopes/astrology without cards?

I am asking for the answer because my sister watches these videos a lot, not out of belief but out of boredom and curiosity (especially now during the COVID period when she is not working). I heard this is very serious in Judaism; please let the esteemed Rabbi tell me whether I should pressure her to stop watching or if it is okay to watch?

Thank you very much, esteemed Rabbi.

Answer

Hello,

One should avoid predicting the future using Tarot cards/astrology, etc., because it is stated in the Torah (Deuteronomy 18:13) "You shall be wholehearted with Hashem your God," and Rashi explains: Walk with Him with simplicity and wait for Him, and do not investigate the future; rather, accept whatever comes to you with simplicity, and thus you will be with Him and His portion.

Also, the Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De'ah (Section 179, Paragraph 1) states that one should not inquire of star-gazers or via lots. The Rema explains: Because it is stated, "You shall be wholehearted with Hashem your God."

However, do not pressure her and do not make a fuss about it; rather, present to her the Halacha gently, and pray that your words will find receptive ears.

Wishing you much success,

Hillel Meira
