Kiddush Without Wine: Is It Possible?

AA

Question

Hello and blessings. If one accidentally finds themselves without wine for Kiddush (on Friday night), is it permitted to make Kiddush without the blessing over the wine? And if there is a little wine that does not fill the entire cup, can one add water and still say the blessing "Borei Peri HaGafen," or must the cup be full? Thank you very much.

Answer

If there is no wine, one makes Kiddush on the challahs and recites the Hamotzi instead of the Borei peri ha-gafen. The cup should be full; therefore, if it concerns wine, if there is a majority of the cup, one can add water to fill the cup. If it is grape juice, do not add water and make Kiddush on a cup that is not full (of course, there must be a minimum measure of at least a Revi'it, which according to the most lenient opinion is about 86 ml).
