On Which Garment Do We Say Shehechiyanu?

AA

Question

Greetings!

When is it customary to say Shehechiyanu on a new garment? Do we say it for every new shirt or pair of pants? And if I buy several shirts and/or pants at once, must I say Shehechiyanu on each piece separately, or do I say it once for all the garments?

Thank you very much!

Answer

Greetings,

1. On any important garment that brings you joy, you should say Shehechiyanu. However, for garments that are not significant, such as a bathrobe, socks, or undergarments, you should not say Shehechiyanu (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 223, Sif 6, and Mishnah Berurah there).

2. You should say Shehechiyanu at the time of wearing the garment (see Shulchan Aruch there, Sif 4, and Mordechai, section 36). For each garment, you should say Shehechiyanu separately unless you are wearing them at the same time, in which case you only say it once, intending to cover all.

Best regards,

Halevi Meirs
