May One Remove Mezuzot When Moving Houses?

AA

Question

Hello, esteemed Rabbi. 1. I know that during the Shabbat prayer we add various additions in the Amida and at the end we say 'Oseh HaShalom' (He who makes peace). I said 'Oseh Shalom' but then remembered mid-prayer and corrected myself to say 'HaShalom'. Do I need to start the prayer over? 2. If one moves houses, do we need to replace the mezuzot? If so, will the new house be without mezuzot until we obtain new ones? 3. When removing shoes or putting on clothing, what is the order?

Answer

Greetings and blessings,

1. Even if you hadn’t corrected yourself and had said 'Oseh Shalom', you do not need to repeat your prayer.

2. You should not take the mezuzot from the old apartment, and there is even a danger in doing so; they should be left for the new tenants. However, if the new tenants are non-Jewish, then you may take the mezuzot from the apartment. If the mezuzot are of a special quality, you may replace them with simpler ones and take the special ones.

Regarding the new apartment to which you are moving, you should check if the mezuzot there are kosher or not. Consider the level of observance of the previous tenants; in any case of doubt, you should replace the mezuzot with kosher and special ones.

3. One should remove the left shoe first and untie the right shoe first. Regarding putting on clothing, one should cover the head first, and then wear the rest of the garments.

Sincerely,
Menashe Ben Porat
