How to Kosher Non-Kosher Utensils?

AA

Question

I have a question about non-kosher utensils and how to kosher them according to the Ashkenazi tradition. I received used utensils that are likely not kosher, including glass cups (for wine, whiskey, cold drink, hot drink), mugs for hot beverages, metal cooking pots, wooden utensils, plastic utensils, nylon knives with plastic edges, non-stick frying pans, steak pans, wooden steamers, and plastic baking molds (which have not been used for baking). Is there a way to make them kosher?

Answer

Hello and welcome,

For glass cups, a good wash is sufficient.

Mugs that are made of ceramic cannot be koshered; however, it seems they were not used for anything forbidden, only for drinking coffee or tea.

All metal and plastic utensils need to be koshered in boiling water that is bubbling on the fire after thorough cleaning and 24 hours of non-use.

The same applies to wooden utensils, but with wooden utensils, one must be cautious as there may be grooves that hold dirt, and they can only be koshered by cleaning all the grooves thoroughly.

Non-stick frying pans that have been used without oil cannot be koshered. The same goes for steak pans.

Utensils that were only used in a cold manner are sufficient with just a wash.

Best regards,

Benjamin Shmueli
