Saying Shema Before Bed
Question
Shalom Rav,
I would like to ask,
Can Shema be recited while lying on the bed, or should it be recited sitting up?
And is it permissible to speak after this prayer?
Thank you
Answer
Chag Sameach,
1. It is permissible to say Shema while sitting on the bed. According to the letter of the law, it can also be recited while lying on one’s side, but not while lying on the back or stomach. It is better to say it standing or sitting, so that one can concentrate properly and also to avoid falling asleep in the middle (see Mishna Berura 239:6 and Shaar Hatziyun 239:10, and Halacha Brura there, section 3).
The Viduy (confession) must be recited standing (according to the custom of the Sephardim) - see https://www.hidabroot.org/question/98567
2. Ideally, one should be careful not to speak after saying Shema before bed, as the Rama writes (Orach Chaim 239:1) that one should recite Shema close to the bed, and one should neither eat nor drink nor speak after reciting Shema before bed but should go to sleep immediately, as it is said (Psalms 4:5) "Say in your hearts, upon your beds, and be silent, Selah."
Nevertheless, there are cases where leniency is permitted, such as if one suddenly feels thirsty; it is permissible to drink, and one should make a blessing on the drink (Responsa Yechave Da'at, Part 4, Section 21, paragraph beginning with 'and among them').
Best regards,
