If I heat a pareve dish in a meat microwave, does the dish become meat?

Question

Hello and blessings,

If I heat a pareve dish in a meat microwave, does the dish become meat or is it considered meat thereby preventing me from eating dairy afterward?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings,

According to Ashkenazi custom, if the microwave is clean and no meat has been heated in it during the last 24 hours, it is permissible to eat the dish with dairy, provided that the dish does not contain anything spicy. If meat has been heated in it within the last 24 hours, one should not eat it with dairy; however, one may eat dairy afterward (see Rema Yoreh De'ah 95:2).

According to Sephardi custom, if the microwave is clean, even if meat has been heated in it during the last 24 hours, it is permissible to eat the dish with dairy (see Shulchan Aruch there, 95:1, and Responsa Yabia Omer, vol. 9, Yoreh De'ah 4).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
