Regarding the Name Alma for Girls

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi, my wife is about to give birth soon, and we wanted to name our daughter Alma, with Naomi as a second name in memory of her late grandmother. I saw that Alma is mentioned in the Bible as the mother of Emmanuel and in a few other places. I wanted to know what the Rabbi thinks about this name and if it is acceptable to name the girl this way. Thank you very much

Answer

Greetings,

There is no prohibition against naming a daughter Alma, but it is not a recommended name. What is written in (Isaiah 7:14), "Behold, the Alma shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel," refers to a young woman (see Radak there), and is not necessarily her name.

Wishing you good news,

Hillel Meirs
