Naming a Daughter in the Synagogue
Question
Hello! When a daughter is born, how is her name announced? I know one must go to the synagogue. Do the mother and daughter also need to be in the synagogue? Thank you in advance! Shabbat Shalom...
Answer
Greetings and blessings!
The mother and her daughter do not go to the synagogue.
The father usually ascends to the Torah, and after he has done so, he asks the gabbai to bless the newborn. He should say:
“May the One who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David, bless and heal the woman who has given birth {so-and-so, daughter of so-and-so} and her daughter who is born for good fortune. May her name be called in Israel….., because her husband will give charity for their merit. With this merit, may her father and mother raise her to Torah, to marriage, and to good deeds, and let us say Amen.”
