Who Was the Ba'al HaYissurim?
Question
Who was the Ba'al HaYissurim? And where can I find material about him? Thank you.
Answer
He was a disciple of the first Rebbe of the Chabad Hasidic movement, and it was said of him that he was entirely detached from the physical world. Therefore, those who visit his grave, especially on the anniversary of his passing, the 16th of Cheshvan, believe they are assured salvation and will receive everything their heart desires. Rabbi Leib Ba'al HaYissurim is buried in the ancient cemetery in Safed, a 5-minute walk from the grave of the Holy Ari.
Thousands of Jews have discovered the special merit of praying at the grave of the tzaddik (righteous person). The merit for prayers to be answered is notably strong when praying on Friday after midday, and on the eve of Rosh Chodesh (the new month). Rabbi Leib himself was, as his name implies, a Jew who suffered greatly, and he promised that whoever visits his grave and prays would have him intercede in Heaven on their behalf.
Near the military section of the ancient cemetery, close to the memorial erected for the martyrs of the gallows in Acre prison, lies the grave of "Leib Ba'al HaYissurim." The great merit is to visit his grave on the eve of Shabbat that falls before Rosh Chodesh, or on the eve of Shabbat of Parashat Vayeira, or on Fridays after midday. (Reported by Moshe Rev Fogel)
