Is it permissible to hold a housewarming during the Three Weeks?

AA

Question

According to the custom of the Ashkenazi, can one hold a housewarming(Chanukat Bayit) during the period of the Three Weeks or should it be postponed until after Tisha B'Av? Thank you!!

Answer

Hello,

A housewarming can be held through studying Torah and providing refreshments, but the joy of the housewarming should be celebrated after Tisha B'Av, at which time one should wear new clothing and recite the Shehechiyanu blessing (Chazon Ovadia, Four Fasts, page 368).

Singing is allowed, but one should not play music with musical instruments (see Chazon Ovadia, Yom Tov, page 271, note 58 regarding the Counting of the Omer).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
