If One Forgot to Recite the Morning Blessings, Should They Recite Them After Prayer?
Question
Hello esteemed Rabbi, due to an early wake-up for work, I put on tefillin at work. Even if I wake up earlier, it is still dark, and dawn has not yet arrived. In order to fulfill the mitzvah in an optimal way, I wait for dawn or as early as possible. However, it occasionally happens that in the middle of the prayer, while I already have my tefillin on, I remember that I did not recite the morning blessings. Should I complete the prayer without stopping and recite the morning blessings after prayer? Or should I stop, remove the tefillin and tallit (prayer shawl), recite the morning blessings, and then put them on again? I say 'Modeh Ani' at home; before putting them on, I always wash my hands automatically, and from there I forgot to recite the morning blessings.
Answer
Hello and blessings,
If you are praying at work and only the Amidah (silent prayer), and you forgot to recite the morning blessings before praying, you should not stop in the middle of the Amidah for the morning blessings, but rather, after the prayer, you will bless the morning blessings except for the blessing 'Elokai Neshama,' which you have already fulfilled with the blessing 'Mechaye Hametim' in the Amidah.
If you are praying the entire prayer, I need to provide more specifics:
If you are in 'Pesukei D'Zimra,' say the morning blessings between 'Yishtabach' and 'Yotzer Or.'
If you began with the blessing 'Yotzer Or,' you should stop between the blessing 'Yotzer Or' and the blessing 'Ahavat Olam' and bless the blessing 'Elokai Neshama' and 'Birkat HaTorah' only, while completing the rest of the blessings after the prayer.
If you have already begun the blessing 'Ahavat Olam,' you have missed the 'Birkat HaTorah,' thus you will only say the blessing 'Elokai Neshama' in between the sections, and recite the rest of the morning blessings after prayer.
If you remembered in the middle of the Amidah, do not stop in the middle of the Amidah, rather you should bless the morning blessings after the Amidah, except for the blessing 'Elokai Neshama' and 'Birkat HaTorah.'
To conclude, I wanted to clarify the timings for putting on tefillin and prayer:
The time for putting on tefillin is not at 'Neitz Hachama' (dawn), but one hour [temporal] before dawn. However, to pray the Amidah of Shacharit (morning service), preferably only at 'Neitz Hachama.'
